How to Add a Single Resource to Aviary

Once you’ve created a collection in Aviary (see past posts in this series to find out how), there are several different ways you can add resources to that collection.

First, it might be helpful to clarify that in Aviary, a “resource” refers to a single intellectual object, even in cases where that object is made up of multiple files. For example, a single interview from an oral history collection may contain several media clips and have index and transcript files associated with those clips. Because all of those files are part of the same interview, they are also considered part of a single resource in Aviary.

One of the beauties of having distinct files make up a single resource is that it allows you to add, edit, and permission at the file-level for every resource you add to Aviary. For example, an audio file for a resource in Aviary might be restricted due to rights issues. Aviary will let you set those restrictions on the media, but it will also allow you to make the index for that same resource publicly available. Because a resource is made up of distinct files, each of its parts can be added, edited, and permissioned discreetly.
