Aviary
Before we get to answering the question of why, you might be wondering what Aviary is? Aviary is AVP’s next-generation platform for streaming audio and video content.
Did your eyes roll when you read “next-generation” and wonder out loud why the heck the world needs another streaming platform? Perfect! We’re so glad you’re here. We would have done the same thing. In fact, this has been our stance going back to 2009 when the early ideas of Aviary started to emerge at AVP. It wasn’t until we could answer that question – the question of why – definitively and convincingly that we decided to develop Aviary. We are now certain that Aviary brings the right feature set at the right time to solve a suite of fundamental issues with current streaming platforms. Aviary warrants the next-generation designation, a place in your mental space, a spot in the marketplace, and a line item on your budget.
In the coming months, through two distinct but closely linked blog series, we will lay out the significant problems that exist with current-generation streaming platforms as a foundation for understanding what makes Aviary truly next-generation. And as we do, we’ll also provide step-by-step tips and guidance for how to get started using the Aviary platform.
AVP
Before we kick off these series, you might wonder who AVP is and why we are the right team to bring this product to fruition. AVP is an information management consulting and software development firm. We were founded in 2006 and we have talked about the need and vision for a platform like Aviary going back to 2009. Day in and day out we have been entrenched in the gaps, needs, aspirations, and possibilities envisioned by our clients and colleagues in the worlds of data management, information management, preservation, and access. We have performed this work within academia, government, media and entertainment, broadcast, corporations, and not-for-profits. Persistently, we saw an unmet set of needs with no good solutions emerging over time. We talked and talked and talked about it over the years. We wrote down features and requirements, but it sat because the timing wasn’t right. Until now. In 2018 we found ourselves in conversation with the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies who shared a frustration with the lack of a solution and a vision for the possibilities. Through these discussions we decided to partner on developing the solution. In 2018 we began development and in January of 2019 the Aviary Platform was launched.
Join Us
We hope you’ll join us in the upcoming weeks as we introduce the fundamentals of Aviary, while also diving into the specific problems that Aviary solves that make it deserving of the “next-generation” label and demonstrate why the world actually does need another AV streaming platform. And along the way, please let us know your questions, comments, objections, and hallelujahs. We would love to hear from you!
