Hapy Holidays!

22 December 2014

So late late late late Friday, we got our annual holiday cards in the post (Ain’t no staff meeting like an envelope stuffing meeting…). For those of you unlucky enough to not be on our mailing list (lines are open — contact us now!) we have been designing and sending out cards since our founding in 2006. At some point in the autumn, Chris comes up with a concept, often tied to the anniversary of a particular media type or format. After running the idea past our team, he begs and pleads with the supremely talented Stephanie Housley to illustrate the design of the card — but don’t tell anyone that because she Alan Smithees the whole effort to protect her reputation.

Fixity V0.3 Released

16 January 2014

Version 0.3 of Fixity, the free fixity monitoring tool developed by AVPreserve, has been officially released for download on our Tools page and via GitHub. Fixity creates a manifest of files stored in directories identified by the user, documenting file names, locations, and checksums. The user can then schedule regular reviews of the directories to monitor for any changes to files that may point to data corruption or loss. Fixity is ideal for monitoring of files in long term storage, complimenting tools such as BagIt that check fixity at points of transition.

This release is a major update, addressing a number of issues related to scheduling, running the utility while a laptop is on battery power, compatibility with both 32-bit and 64-bit systems, and some user interface revisions. A Mac version should be released in the coming weeks. Download the new version of Fixity and keep giving us your feedback so we can continue to improve the tool.

This year we celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the standardization of SMPTE time code – structural and technical metadata which enables frame accurate synchronization, editing and identification of film, video and audio. Widely adopted before the term metadata came into popular use, SMPTE time code became the backbone of production and post-production processes, and it aids caretakers of audiovisual collections in numerous ways. Looking at the history and uses of SMPTE time code, one understands the limitations of the old description ‘data about data’. Metadata is vital information about the things we make and do, and information that lets us do more.

Metadata gives form to things that are otherwise shapeless and ambiguous, deriving value from concepts, information, and objects that appear to have little intrinsic worth. Metadata is the key to our ability to find, unlock, and use information that would otherwise remain obscure or out of reach. It is the reason we can recognize the creator of a work, find the owner of an object, authenticate historic records, discover the content we are looking for, articulate the value of our collections, and effectively manage them.

A search of the New York Times reveals that the term “metadata” came up once between 1970 and 1980. In contrast the term was used 208 times between 2000 and 2010. Not more relevant, just more recognized, metadata is here to stay, and to that we say, hip hip hooray!!!

AVPS Releases 2011 Holiday Card

29 December 2011

AudioVisual Preservation Solutions released its sixth annual original greeting card for the 2011 holiday season. This year’s card features an illustration of the first commercially available 3/4″ U-matic deck in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of its initial release to consumers and significance in the wider adoption of videotape beyond the television studio.

Also available for viewing now is the 2010 holiday card, which features a punch-hole design of the AVPS logo in recognition of the history of punch cards in the development of modern digital technologies.

As in past years, the cards are inspired by the field that we work in and its history. As audiovisual and digital media become a more ingrained part of society, we often forget the moments of origin or the amazing advancements they represented. The original art work is created by Stephanie Housley, a New York based artist/designer.

We are pleased to send these greetings to our clients and all of the other members of our community who are dedicated to the preservation of our audiovisual heritage. We are especially delighted to note that we often see the cards posted in the archives we work in long after the holiday season has ended.
